Are you aware that Adulterants and Additives are commonly added to powdered spices to increase their bulk and also to enhance their colour?

The commonly used adulterant to increase the chilli powder bulk includes brick powder, salt powder or talc powder.  

To test for artificial colours, sprinkle some chilli powder into water and if you notice colour streaks, the chilli powder is probably artificially coloured.
